Modular kitchen: what to ask before you sign
Layout, carcass material, shutters, hardware, appliances, timelines and warranty — the questions to ask a modular kitchen maker before you pay an advance.

A modular kitchen is used several times a day for years, in heat, steam and moisture. Two quotes for "the same" kitchen can differ widely because the materials inside differ — and you only discover the difference when a shutter sags or a cabinet swells. Asking the right questions before signing protects you.
Layout and measurements
- Ask for a site measurement by the maker, not your own estimate.
- Discuss the layout — straight, L-shaped, U-shaped or parallel — based on the space, windows and plumbing.
- Plan positions for the sink, hob, chimney, fridge, water purifier and power points before the design is final.
Carcass: the part you do not see
The carcass is the box of each cabinet.
- Ask what board is used (for example, a specific grade of plywood, HDHMR or particle board) and its thickness.
- Ask which board is used for sink cabinets, which face constant moisture.
- Ask whether edges are properly banded to keep moisture out.
Shutters and finishes
- Laminate, acrylic, membrane, PU, glass — each has a different look, durability and cost.
- Look at real samples in daylight, not only brochures.
- Ask how each finish handles heat and cleaning.
Hardware quality
Hinges, channels, drawer systems and baskets take daily wear.
- Ask which hardware brands are used.
- Ask whether drawers and hinges are soft-close.
- Ask for the hardware warranty separately.
Countertop, appliances and accessories
Clarify what is included: countertop material, sink, tap, hob, chimney, built-in oven, tall units, corner solutions. Missing items are a common reason for final bills rising.
Timelines, payments and warranty
- Ask for a written timeline from design sign-off to installation.
- Link payments to stages — advance, delivery, installation completion.
- Ask what the warranty covers and for how long, and who handles service.
Mistakes to avoid
- Choosing only from a 3D render. Renders make every material look perfect. Touch real samples of the board and shutters.
- Cheap boards under the sink. This is where leaks happen; use the most water-resistant board you can afford there.
- Too few power points. Plan sockets for every appliance you use today and one or two more for later.
- Paying most of the amount upfront. Keep a meaningful part of the payment for after installation and checks.
- Not planning ventilation. A chimney needs a proper duct outlet; confirm the route before the design is final.

Compare kitchen makers in furniture and furnishings, or post your requirement for a site visit.
