Buying safety shoes, gloves and helmets for a factory
Matching protective equipment to real hazards, sizing, certification, comfort and replacement cycles — how to buy PPE that workers actually wear.

Personal protective equipment only protects people who wear it. Gear that is uncomfortable, the wrong size or wrong for the job ends up in a locker. Buying PPE well means starting from the actual hazards on your floor and choosing items workers will keep on through a full shift.
Start with the hazards
Walk the shop floor and list what can hurt people:
- Falling or heavy objects, sharp edges, hot surfaces
- Chemicals, oils and solvents
- Flying particles from grinding or cutting
- Noise, dust and fumes
- Electrical work
Each hazard points to the kind of protection needed.
Safety shoes
- Toe protection (steel or composite toe) where heavy items are handled.
- Sole properties — slip resistance, oil resistance, heat resistance or puncture resistance as your floor requires.
- Electrical work may need footwear rated for it.
- Order a sizing sample set; ill-fitting shoes cause blisters and get abandoned.
Gloves
Different jobs need different gloves:
- Cut-resistant gloves for sheet metal and glass
- Chemical-resistant gloves for handling solvents or cleaners
- Heat-resistant gloves for hot work and welding
- General-purpose coated gloves for material handling
One glove type rarely suits a whole factory.
Helmets, eyewear and more
- Helmets — check fit, adjustable harness and ventilation for hot conditions.
- Safety glasses or goggles — for grinding, cutting and chemical splashes; anti-fog helps in humid weather.
- Ear protection in noisy areas.
- Masks or respirators where there is dust or fumes, matched to the hazard.
Certification
Ask which standards each item is certified to and ask for documentation. Genuine certification matters more than brand names.
Comfort and replacement
- Involve a few workers in trials before bulk orders.
- PPE wears out: plan replacement cycles and keep stock of common sizes.
- Train people on correct use and care.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying one type of glove for everything. A glove that protects from cuts may do nothing against chemicals or heat.
- Ignoring comfort in summer. Heavy, unventilated gear gets removed in the heat. Trial items during your hottest months, not just in a cool office.
- Not replacing worn gear. A cracked helmet or a shoe with worn soles gives false confidence. Set a replacement schedule and inspect regularly.
- No training. Many injuries happen with PPE that was worn wrongly — loose helmet straps, goggles on the forehead. A short demonstration at the start of each shift season helps.
- Leaving visitors out. Keep spare helmets, glasses and shoe covers for visitors, drivers and contractors entering the shop floor.
What to include in your enquiry
- Items needed with quantities and size break-up
- Hazards and work environment for each item
- Certification requirements
- Whether you need a monthly supply arrangement
- Delivery location and GSTIN
Compare PPE suppliers in safety, security and surveillance, or post your requirement with your item list.
